Two more Gophers women advanced to the NCAA track and field meet with high finishes in the West Preliminary meet in Lawrence, Kan.

Agnes Esser placed second in the discus (190 feet) with a new program record. Shanique Wright took fourth in the triple jump (42-9).

They will join six teammates at the national meet June 8-11 in Eugene, Ore.

In the men's competition, the Gophers' 4x400 relay (Nate Roese, Jack Wellenstein, Goaner Deng and Brad Neumann) took 12th (3:05.95) to advance.

Johnnie wins title

St. John's Ryan Bugler, a junior from Okinawa, Japan, won the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:11.98) at the NCAA Division III meet in Waverly, Iowa.

The title is the Johnnies' fifth individual national championship in outdoor track and field but first since 1999.

• Augsburg's Emmanuel Egbujor, a freshman from Champlin Park, finished third in the 200 (21.90) and fifth in the 100 (10.98).

• Jagger Gran of Sioux Falls placed fourth in the pole vault (17-0) at the NCAA Division II meet in Bradenton, Fla.

• Century College of White Bear Lake lost 11-1 to Tyler (Texas) in their first game of the NJCAA Division III World Series in Kinston, N.C. Noah Bluh was 2-for-3 for the Woods Ducks (38-12), who gave up five runs in the fifth and three in the sixth and ninth.

• Minnesota Moorhead hired Joe Christianson as its men's and women's golf coach, and Joseph Murray as its men's and women's tennis coach.

• Two North Dakota hockey players — defenseman Nick Mattson of Chanhassen and women's goalie Shelby Amsley-Benzie of Warroad, Minn. — were awarded NCAA postgraduate scholarships of $7,500.
