The Gophers men's tennis team lost 4-1 to Purdue on Thursday in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center.

Felix Corwin and Matic Spec won 6-3 at No. 1 doubles and Jeremy Lynn and Justyn Levin 6-4 at No. 3 doubles for the Gophers, the No. 10 seed, to secure the doubles point.

But the Boilermakers (16-9), who beat the Gophers 4-2 last Friday, clinched the rematch by winning the first four singles matches to finish. Minnesota ends the season 8-18 overall, 2-10 against conference foes.

In other matches, Nebraska defeated Wisconsin 5-2, Iowa beat Indiana 4-1 and Penn State ousted Michigan State 4-0.

• Spec, a sophomore from Maribor, Slovenia, was named to the All-Big Ten first all-conference team for the second consecutive year.

U women fall, too

The Gophers women's tennis team lost 4-1 to Wisconsin in the first round of the Big Ten tournament at East Lansing, Mich.

The Badgers, seeded 10th, won the doubles point and singles matches at No. 2, 4 and 5 to clinch the match.

Annemarie Emme of the Gophers beat Maria Avgerinos 6-4, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Eighth-seeded Minnesota finishes the season 13-12 overall, 5-7 vs. conference opponents, including a 5-2 win over the Badgers in late February.

UMD recruit honored

• Hunter Shepard of the Bismarck Bobcats was named the NAHL goalie of the year. Shepard, a native of Cohasset, Minn., will play for Minnesota Duluth in the 2016-17 season.
