The Gophers baseball team lost 7-2 to Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Minnesota (9-5) scored single runs in the second inning on Micah Coffey's homer to center field and in the seventh on Matt Stemper's homer to center but had only two other hits.

Brett Schulze took the loss, giving up five runs in 5â…“ innings. He struck out five and walked one.

The Bears (11-3) of Springfield, Mo., scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 6-1 lead.

Dylan Coleman of Missouri State (11-3) gave up both homers and all four hits in seven innings. He struck out seven and walked none.

The Gophers won the first game of their series with Missouri State 5-2 on Friday. The team play again at 1 p.m. Sunday.

U men lose in tennis

The Gophers men's tennis team lost 4-3 to Wisconsin in Madison in its Big Ten opener. Matic Spec of the Gophers (10-4, 0-1 Big Ten) defeated Lamar Remy 6-4, 7-6 at No. 1 singles. Teammates Stefan Milicevic at No. 2 and Josip Krstanovic at No. 5 also won in straight sets.

With the match tied 3-all, Josef Dodridge of Wisconsin (10-2, 2-0) beat Felix Corwin, 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 for the deciding point. "When I fell behind 3-0 in the third set," Dodridge said, "I just told myself I had to get back to what I do best. In tight situations, when you do the basics well, you tend to come through."

• The Gophers' distance medley relay team placed ninth in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in College Station, Texas in 9:41.11. Member were Shane Streich, Jackson Wellenstein, Mitch Hechsel and Derek Wiebke. Mississippi won the event in 9:31.32.

• The Gophers' varsity eight placed second in the 1A race at the Cardinal Invitational on Melton Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. "We haven't been able to row for over a week because of the high winds back home so we feel a bit less prepared than we would like," Gophers coach Wendy Davis said before the race. "On the other hand, we have had really solid practices with great focus."
