The top-seeded Gophers advanced to the Big Ten women's soccer semifinals with a 3-1 victory over Indiana on Sunday at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium, a victory that gave Minnesota home field for the remainder of the tournament.

Julianna Gernes scored in the game's third minute and Josee Stiever scored late in the first half for a 2-0 advantage for the Gophers (14-3-3). Sydney Squires got the Gophers' final goal in the 83rd minute.

"We knew this was going to be a tough game," Gophers coach Stefanie Golan said. "To score in the first few minutes was crucial for us, but we had to battle for 90 minutes to come out with the result. All year we've taken it one game at a time, one day at a time, and that's what we'll continue."

Minnesota led the Hoosiers in shots (15-11), shots on goal (5-4) and corner kick opportunities (6-5).

The Gophers will face Michigan on Friday, with the winner facing the Rutgers-Northwestern winner.

Gophers fourth in cross-country

The host Gophers placed fourth in the Big Ten men's cross-country championship meet, with Charlie Lawrence (ninth overall), Matt Welch (13th) and Connor Olson (14th) earning second-team all-conference honors in the 8,000-meter race on the Led Bolstad course. Wisconsin, led by medalist Morgan McDonald, won the meet with 63 points, three ahead of Michigan. Indiana (92) was third.

"Our three all-Big Ten runners really led us well," Gophers coach Steve Plasencia said. "Overall, I think things started to come together for us today. Of course we'd like to be in the mix for a championship, but we're a little young, and we aren't quite there yet."

• The Gophers women placed fourth with 120 points, with three top-20 finishers as well. Madeline Strandemo led the Gophers in eighth place, clocking a time of 21:10.2 over 6,000 meters. Megan Hasz of Alexandria finished 11th in 21:24.9 and sister Bethany Hasz 20th in 21:41.5.

Michigan won with 63 points, seven ahead of Penn State.

"I told the team that we were probably a third- to sixth-place team on any given day, so to be fourth, I'm really pleased with that," coach Sarah Hopkins said. "We're right where we should be right now."
