The Gophers' Luca Wieland, a sophomore from Berlin, won the heptathlon on Saturday at the NCAA indoor track and field championships in Fayetteville, Ark.

Wieland had a score of 6,070 points, the eighth highest by a college athlete, but a mere two points more than Garrett Scantling of Georgia. His score also broke the program record of 5,769 he set in winning the Big Ten heptathlon two weeks ago.

Said Wieland, "Winning a national championship and breaking 6,000 is just incredible."

After two seconds, a third and a fourth on Day 1, Wieland placed fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.13 seconds), seventh in the pole vault (15-7) and, in the last event, seventh in the 1,000 (2:45.35) less than a second behind Scantling who was sixth.

• In the pentathlon, junior Jess Herauf of the Gophers placed fifth. Her score of 4,372 was a program record.
