The ones that went away

Five metro-area football coaches reveal one rivalry game they wish they could bring back.

Charles Adams, Minneapolis North

Minneapolis Henry. The two schools, which last competed for the North Side Championship in 2014, sit less than 4 miles apart.

Chad Clendening, Apple Valley

The Battle for the Apple trophy stopped moving the 3 miles between Apple Valley and Eastview in 2016, and Clendening doesn't like them apples.

Jared Essler, St. Michael-Albertville

Moving up to Class 6A means the Knights no longer play Buffalo for the Muddy Crow trophy. But Essler said his players and the community would love to see Rogers again. The teams battled 14 times in nine seasons from 2008-16.

Darin Glazier, Park of Cottage Grove

Glazier values parity and a good experience over rivalries but would welcome playing fellow District 833 school Woodbury each year. That last happened in 2014.

Rich Wilkie, Andover

"The kids would probably pick Anoka," Wilkie said. "With the chatter on social media and bragging rights alone, you didn't need a traveling trophy." Until this year, the intradistrict rivals met at least once annually since 2004.
