MILWAUKEE — Homeowners in the Milwaukee metro area paid a median of $125,000 for their homes — and $315,000 for homes built in the past four years.

The figure was among federal statistics released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau. The agency looked at housing prices in major metropolitan areas across the country. In Wisconsin that included communities in the Milwaukee, Waukesha and West Allis metro areas.

Wisconsin's numbers were better than the U.S. median. Homeowners nationwide paid $110,000 for their homes overall, or $235,000 for recently constructed homes.

Other results of the Census survey:

— Median mortgage payments in the Milwaukee area were $1,100 per month, compared to $1,015 nationally

— Homeowners in southeastern Wisconsin paid median real estate taxes of $300 per month, twice the national median of $151.
