CLEVELAND -- Twins catcher Joe Mauer bruised his left heel while lunging into first base Friday night. He's not in the lineup tonight and is listed as day-to-day, but this could be a touchy injury.

The Twins have Wilson Ramos on his way from Class AAA Rochester. They will have a roster move after tonight's game. Tonight's starter, Jeff Manship, might be sent back to Rochester to make room for Ramos.

The Twins need Ramos because they are concerned about playing with one catcher. Drew Butera gets his fourth major league start behind the plate tonight, and if he gets hurt, the Twins would be scrambling for an emergency catcher.

There is no telling how long Mauer will be out, but the only thing he can do is ice and rest. The Twins won't want to rush him back because this is an injury that can linger.

Update: Nick Blackburn, who is on the Family Medical Emergency List, is scheduled to return to the Twins and pitch Tuesday against Detroit. The Twins' scheduled starters for that series are Scott Baker (Monday), Blackburn, then Kevin Slowey (Wednesday).

Carl Pavano will pitch Thursday against Baltimore. This gives him an extra day to rest his stiff neck.

Update: Manager Ron Gardenhire did say that Mauer was available to pinch hit tonight, but they would only turn to him to catch in an extreme emergency.

"It's something you don't screw around with," Gardenhire said. "Heel bruises can really linger."

Said Mauer: "I really don't know what to expect. I've never had it. I'm hoping it doesn't last too long, hopefully a couple days, I just don't know."
