Minneapolis police say a man hit by a train early Saturday suffered severe injuries to his legs.

The man, who police have not yet identified, was taken into surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center following the accident shortly after midnight on Nicollet Island.

A friend called police from a nearby house in the 200 block of E. Island Avenue, said John Elder, a Minneapolis police spokesman.

"We have no idea what they were doing on the tracks," Elder said, adding that police believe that alcohol may have been a factor in what happened.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the man's legs had been fully severed or nearly severed, and whether doctors could save or reattach them.

The condition of the man, who is in his 30s and believed to be from Minneapolis, was not available on Saturday.
