A man in a standoff with police in northeast Minneapolis for several hours was found dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The 2400 block of NE. Pierce Street was closed off after police received a call about 1:30 p.m. about a man who was suicidal and had a weapon, said Sgt. Steve McCarty, a Minneapolis police spokesman.

Police set up a perimeter and told neighbors to stay in their homes.

McCarty said negotiators made contact with the man, who had no hostages. After several hours at the scene, SWAT officers were able to look inside and saw a man unresponsive inside. Police went inside and found the man dead.

McCarty said he was not aware of other police calls to the address.
