In the discussion growing out of the National Labor Relations Board's decision regarding the Northwestern University football team and the establishment of a union to represent the players, little if any attention has been devoted to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which provides that: "No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance." Any benefits available to Northwestern's students playing football must be made available to students on the gymnastics or rowing teams.

Much attention is given to how much money colleges and universities take in with revenue-producing sports such as football. It should be noted that the football and basketball programs bring in sufficient revenues to support, and to allow to exist, the other, non-revenue-producing programs.

Let us not rush to a judgment that may lead to the demise of college athletic programs as we currently know them.
