The full Legislature on Monday picked four people for open seats on the University of Minnesota's Board of Regents. They will serve six-year, unpaid terms on the governing board.
They are:
Steve Sviggum, a Republican, former Speaker of the state House of Representatives and a farmer
David McMillan, executive vice president of Allete and a resident of Duluth
David Larson, a recently-retired executive at Cargill and an incumbent member of the Board of Regents
Laura Brod, a former Republican state representative first elected in 2002
The four were all part of a slate recommended by a joint meeting of the higher education committees last week.
DFL legislators, many of whom said they were frustrated by the partisan nature of the process, tried unsuccessfully to re-introduce alternative candidates, including incumbent Steven Hunter, who is secretary/treasurer for the AFL-CIO.
