A 16-year-old driver lost control of her car Wednesday morning on a slushy road just short her destination, Lakeville North High School, and was killed in a collision with an SUV, authorities said.

The crash occurred about 9:45 a.m. on Dodd Boulevard, about a quarter-mile north of the high school, police said.

Classes at the school were delayed for two hours as part of a "late start/early dismissal" day and not in association with the snowy weather.

Killed was Alyssa Ettl, a junior whom the school district described in a notice on its website as "an exceptional student, athlete and friend to many."

Alyssa was a member of the soccer team and was named captain for next year. She and her teammates were state runners-up to Minnetonka in Class AA.

She was also an active member of DECA, a school-based club for students interested in business.

Ettl was driving south on Dodd, south of 190th Street, and "lost control on the slush-covered roadway, slid sideways and was broadsided" by the northbound SUV, police said in a statement.

Dodd was closed while emergency responders arrived at the scene and authorities investigated the crash scene, police added.

The SUV's driver and a passenger were slightly hurt.

Several churches in the community have planned events in connection with Ettl's death, the school district web site noted.
