Nathaniel Khaliq, retired head of the St. Paul NAACP and a former St. Paul firefighter, will be appointed to fill out the term of St. Paul City Council Member Melvin Carter III, who is stepping down.
The council on Wednesday will approve the appointment of Khaliq from among more than a dozen who applied for the position representing Ward 1.
He will hold the seat until a special election is held in November to fill out the remaining two years of Carter's term.
Carter announced last month that he will step down July 5 to become director of the state Office of Early Learning. The City Council sought applicants who live in the ward and don't plan to run for the office this fall.
Khaliq, 69, also served as president of the Summit-University Planning Council.
