The I-35W bridge over the Mississippi River in downtown Minneapolis was glowing orange Thursday night to bring attention to the problem of gun violence.

The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Betsy Hodges declared Thursday as National Gun Violence Awareness/Orange Walk Day.

"Gun violence has no place in Minneapolis or in any other city," Hodges said. "Sensible, smart gun policies can prevent gun violence. I call on every Minneapolitan to join me and commit to keeping guns out of the wrong hands and encouraging those who legally own firearms to be responsible and safe."

Americans are 25 times more likely to be murdered with guns than people in other developed countries and 91 people are killed by gun violence (and countless others injured) each day, according to a resolution passed by the council.

"We need to do everything we can to keep our communities safe from gun violence," said the resolution's author, Council Member John Quincy. "The rights of the law-abiding public have to go hand in hand with our call for a future free from gun violence."

The resolution called for people to wear orange in solidarity and honor the lives and lost human potential of Americans stolen by gun violence.
