A mother-and-daughter trip of a lifetime has ended in tragedy for a young Ham Lake family.

After swimming with dolphins on Thursday off Jamaica, Crystal Glewwe, 32, and her 9-year-old daughter, Kayden, climbed onto a bus that was to carry them and others back to their cruise ship.

When the bus was crushed in a four-vehicle collision, Grewwe was fatally injured and Kayden was critically hurt.

Substance Church Pastor Peter Haas confirmed the death of Crystal Glewwe — whose husband, Rick Glewwe, is also a pastor at the Spring Lake Park church — on the church's website and on social media. Kayden's injuries were severe enough to require surgery, he wrote.

Rick Glewwe and the church's executive pastor, Bart Scharrer, immediately flew to Jamaica to be with Kayden, Haas wrote. They were expected to return this weekend.

The two were among at least 20 people injured in the crash in the northern parish of Trewlany on Thursday, according to Jamaican media.

Reports said the crash happened when a Freightliner truck traveling in the opposite direction failed to keep to the left and collided with the bus.

In a statement to news media, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. said the bus crashed as it was returning passengers to their Independence of the Seas cruise ship after a shore excursion.

Glewwe died while being treated at a hospital. Kayden and two others were also taken to the hospital. Other passengers were treated at the crash site and released back to the ship.

The Glewwes have three other children between the ages of 20 months and 6 years.

Haas said the church plans to set up a memorial fund and will post details soon on its website, substancechurch.com.

Thousands of people visited and shared Haas' Facebook page notice on Friday and Saturday, and many posted condolences and offered prayers for the family and the church.

Those weighing in included cruise ship passengers who were told of the crash by the ship's captain and residents of Jamaica who heard about it on their local news.

In addition, hundreds of people packed the evangelical church's Spring Lake Park campus for a weekend prayer service.

"I'm still struggling to wrap my mind around this," Haas wrote, adding that he and church leaders are "completely torn up."
