We will know on Wednesday the date that Green Line trains will begin running between Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Metropolitan Council Chair Susan Haigh and Knight Foundation Program Director Polly Talen will make the announcement of the line's grand opening during a press conference at 10:30 a.m. at Union Depot at 4th and Sibley Streets in downtown St. Paul.

Built at a cost of about $957 million, the metro area's second light-rail line will run 11 miles from Union Depot to Target Field Station in downtown Minneapolis. It will follow University Avenue and include stops at the University of Minnesota and the Metrodome/Downtown East station. Riders can connect to the Blue Line in Minneapolis. That line runs from downtown to the Mall of America in Bloomington.

The Central Corridor, as it was referred to during construction, will have 47 light rail vehicles each with 66 seats and room for 70 standing passengers. Travel time between the downtowns will be 39 minutes. Trains will run every 10 minutes.

More than 40,000 people are expected to board each weekday by 2030, the Met Council estimates.
