Gophers, Madeline Strandemo are runners-up in Big Ten women's cross-country

Madeline Strandemo ran 6,000 meters in a career-best 20 minutes, 13.5 seconds for second place, and the Gophers women's cross-country team also took second at the Big Ten championship on Sunday in Bloomington, Ind.

The Gophers scored 86 points to 55 for Michigan. Wisconsin (100), Penn State (107) and Michigan State (119) rounded out the top five.

Strandemo, a senior from Fargo, N.D., finished behind Indiana's Katherine Receveur (20:10.3).

Gophers twin sisters Megan (fifth) and Bethany Hasz (10th) also earned top-10 spots. Bailey Ness was 30th and Abby Kohut-Jackson 39th.

•  Gophers senior Obsa Ali ran 8,000 meters in 24:19.7, finishing eighth and earning second-team All-Big Ten honors. The Gophers men took eighth with 142 points, 71 behind champion Michigan.

U soccer loses

Wisconsin scored once in each half and beat the host and third-seeded Gophers 2-0 in the opening round of the Big Ten women's soccer tournament. The Gophers (11-5-3) will wait until next Sunday for the NCAA tournament field to be announced. The sixth-seeded Badgers (13-4-2) play No. 2 seed Northwestern in a semifinal Friday in Westfield, Ind.
