The Gophers scored a run in the top of the ninth inning and five runs in the 12th to beat Creighton 8-6 on Saturday in Omaha, Neb., in nonconference baseball. Matt Halloran drew a base-loaded walk in the ninth for Minnesota (4-7) to tie the score at 3-all and Michael Handel hit a three-run homer in the 12th.

Tommies rule track

Brian Jarvey won the 200- and 400-meter runs for the second consecutive year to lead St. Thomas to its 31st men's title in a row in the MIAC indoor track and field championships at Concordia (Moorhead). He also ran the anchor leg on the winning 4x400 relay. The Tommies finished with a score of 162, the Oles were second with 142.

In the women's meet, St. Thomas easily won its 16th consecutive title. The Tommies had 199.7 points, runner-up Bethel 87. Kayla Goeman of St. Thomas won the 600- and 800-meter runs, while teammate Emily Gapinski took first in the 1,000 and mile. Dani Larson of St. Olaf won the pentathlon and the high jump.

U wins twice in softball

Catcher Taylor LeMay hit a homer in each game and had seven RBI — four in the second game — as the Gophers beat Santa Clara 9-6 and host Stanford 9-1 on Saturday in the Louisville Slugger Classic softball tournament in Palo Alto. Hannah Granger was 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Gophers (17-4) in the first game; Kaitlyn Richardson had a two-run homer in the five-inning second game.

• Gwen Jorgensen of St. Paul, the reigning world champion in women's triathlon, opened the sport's elite season Saturday with her sixth consecutive victory in the International Triathlon Union's world triathlon series. She won the ITU World Triathlon Abu Dhabi in a time of 58 minutes, 59 seconds for the 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike race and 5K run.

• The St. Thomas women's hockey team edged visiting Bethel 3-2 in the MIAC playoffs championship game. Heidi Winiecki broke a 2-all tie with her second goal of the game with 6:37 left.
