Freshman Republican state Rep. Kurt Bills announced Thursday that he is running for U.S. Senate to bring "Econ 101" to Washington.

"I have been teaching economics at Rosemount High School for 15 years and have watched in great detail as our various deficits and debt have grown to shockingly large proportions," Bills said.

Bills, who made his announcement outside on a snowy morning in Rosemount, said that he would get into specific cuts and plans to wrangle the federal debt at a later time.

After a quick announcement and answering a few questions, Bills rushed back to the state Capitol for committee work.

Bills, 42, is a Republican with libertarian leanings. He was a high-profile supporter of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul during the state caucuses in February.

Bills has introduced a measure at the state Capitol to make gold and silver legal tender.

He and a small handful of other GOP candidates are vying to defeat Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar, who is running for a second term.
