Jared Spooner scored late in the opening period and Jake Jaremko early in the second as No. 3 Minnesota State Mankato edged visiting Michigan Tech 2-1 on Friday night in the opener of a best-of-three WCHA semifinal series.

Joel L'Esperance scored midway through the third period for the Huskies. Connor LaCouvee stopped 18 shots for the Mavericks, Devin Kero 26 for Michigan Tech.

NCHC quarterfinals

No. 8 Minnesota Duluth 5, Western Michigan 0: Freshman defenseman Scott Perunovich had a goal and two assists and Hunter Shepard stopped 26 shots as the Bulldogs defeated the visiting Broncos in the opener of their best-of-three quarterfinal series.

No. 14 North Dakota 4, No. 13 Omaha 0: Shane Gersich scored a goal in the first period and UND scored three more in the second to beat the visiting Mavericks. Cam Johnson made 25 saves for the shutout. Christian Wolanin made it 2-0 Fighting Hawks with a power-play goal just 1 minute into the second. Nick Jones and Joel Janatuinen had goals in the final 8 minutes of the period. Evan Weninger had 30 saves for Omaha.

No. 1 St. Cloud State 5, Miami (Ohio) 2: Jack Ahcan had a goal and an assist as the Huskies beat the visiting RedHawks. Jimmy Schuldt and Blake Lizotte scored second-period goals to put SCSU ahead 3-1.

Division III women

Wis.-Eau Claire 3, Gustavus 2 (3 OT): Emma Peterson scored at 1:02 of the third overtime as the Blugolds (18-6-4) edged the host Gusties in an NCAA Division III tournament play-in game. Amelia Vosen had two goals for the Gusties (20-3-4), who had a 60-29 edge in shots on goal.
