The attorney for the family of a 24-year-old man who was shot and killed by St. Paul police earlier this year on Monday requested a civil rights investigation into the case.

St. Paul police have said that Marcus Golden was shot and killed by two officers Jan. 14 after he failed to obey orders and drove his vehicle at one of the officers in an apartment building parking lot. Police were originally called to the building on the 200 block of University Avenue on a report that Golden was making death threats via text message.

According to a 911 transcript released last week by police, the caller who identified himself as the former boyfriend of Golden's ex-girlfriend told an emergency dispatcher that Golden had a gun. A loaded handgun was within Golden's reach when he was shot, police said.

On Monday, the attorney for Golden's mother presented the shooting case to the U.S. Department of Justice as part of a request for a civil rights investigation.

The shooting of Golden, who was black, led to the head of the St. Paul chapter of the NAACP to call for an independent investigation into Golden's death. Golden's family also participated in a march against police brutality after the shooting.

Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said last month that he would likely present the case to a grand jury to determine if the St. Paul officers involved acted appropriately.
