Enbridge Energy Partners says it's investigating the cause of a crude oil leak at its pumping station in the northwestern Minnesota town of Viking.
The leak was discovered Tuesday afternoon. Enbridge spokesman Larry Springer says a little less than 600 gallons spilled on the ground, or 14 barrels. He says it was completely contained within a protective barrier inside the pumping station perimeter.
Springer says the leak involved a 2-inch pipe that's part of the pressure measurement system, not the main pipeline itself. However, he says, the main pipeline was shut down for a little over five hours as a precaution while the source was confirmed and repairs began.
He says crews will have to dig up about 50 cubic yards of soil and take it to a disposal facility.
