Authorities captured two men Thursday morning shortly after they allegedly broke into an Elk River home, severely beat a man inside, fled in a red Cadillac and then, when they were spotted by police a few miles away, crashed their car while trying to get away.

The men, ages 31 and 40, are being held in Sherburne County jail on suspicion of first degree burglary, second degree assault and "possibly" aggravated robbery, said Elk River Police Captain Bob Kluntz.

The pair broke into a house in the 18500 block of Quincy Court in Elk River shortly after 9 a.m., according to Kluntz. They beat a man inside the house with a blunt object but didn't hurt the man's wife or 2-year-old child, who was asleep, according to Kluntz. The victim was listed in stable condition Thursday evening at Mercy Hospital in Coon Rapids, according to Kluntz.

The men drove off in a red Cadillac, but a Rogers police officer spotted them near Interstate 94 in Rogers and gave chase. The suspects crashed near the intersection of highways 81 and 101 and were arrested, said Kluntz.

The case remains under investigation.
