Edina High School's athletic director, John Soma, resigned Monday after being placed on administrative leave in August.

"I resigned for personal and family reasons, and know Edina High School will continue their success this school year with their outstanding staff and students," Soma said in a text message to the Star Tribune.

Soma was being investigated by the school district after it received allegations "that had nothing to do with his employment at Edina public schools," said Susan Brott, district communications director.

He was placed on administrative leave Aug. 23. The district investigation ended when the Edina school board accepted Soma's resignation at its meeting Monday night, Brott said.

"With him no longer being an employee, we're no longer investigating," she said. She said state privacy laws prevented her from saying more.

Soma, 34, had been an assistant principal and athletic director at Edina High School since 2009. He is a member of the Minnesota State High School League board of directors and previously worked as activities director at Woodbury High School.

Edina High School Principal Bruce Locklear will lead the transition in the athletic department, according to a district statement. Other administrators will share Soma's assistant principal duties for now.

Brott said an interim athletic director might be appointed as soon as the next couple of days.
