The Eden Prairie Community Center is among the few gyms or community centers in the metro area to start fitness classes specifically for cancer survivors.

The classes, which start April 9, are geared for adult cancer survivors to improve endurance and strength. They will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays for 10 weeks.

"We saw a need here in our community," Kara Jeter said via e-mail about starting the program.

She first got the idea from her sister, who runs a cancer survivor exercise program in Eau Claire, Wis. Jeter received a cancer exercise certificate through the American Council of Sports Medicine and is one of two trainers in the program.

The program will begin April 9 with a 1-2:30 p.m. session. A second program starts this summer.

The program costs $25 for community members and $50 for nonmembers. To learn more, go to www.startribune.com/a2145 or call 952-949-8470.
