Backers of Democratic early voting proposals moving forward at the Capitol will hit a roadblock with DFL Gov. Mark Dayton.
Asked about the proposals, which would allow Minnesotans to vote during a determined pre-Election Day period, Dayton said he is not digging into specifics because they currently lack Republican backing.
"I've said consistently and will continue to say consistently that …any changes in election laws need broad bipartisan support," Dayton said on Thursday. "To be honest, I haven't looked into the details of each of the proposals yet because I'm waiting to see if anything is going to move forward on that basis."
So far, Republican lawmakers have been cool or voted against proposals to extend voting before Election Day.
Thirty-two states and the District of Columbia currently offer some form of early voting.
Despite Minnesota's lack of that convenience, voters in the state turnout at higher rates than voters in any other state around the country.
