Day 2 from TPC Twin Cities

Round recap

Records are meant to be broken, and they were shattered Saturday at TPC Twin Cities in Blaine. The day's scoring average (67.883) beat a 12-year-old PGA Tour Champions record, highlighted by a 3M Championship record second-round 60 by Paul Goydos. He holds the lead at 14 under with Kenny Perry and Gene Sauers. With virtually no wind and greens still soft from Thursday's rain, only 11 players failed to break par.

Chip shots

• Billy Mayfair made a hole-in-one on No. 8, using a 5-iron from 205 yards. It's the 11th in 3M history.

• There have been 822 birdies through 36 holes.

• Sauers has hit all 36 greens in regulation.

Hole of the day

Par-5, 582-yard No. 18: On a record-setting day to go low, eight players tamed the 18th with eagles, and there were 48 birdies. The hole played nearly three-quarters of a stroke below par.

Quote of the day

"Might be quicker to go through the pars." — Goydos, asked to break down his 10 birdies.

Quoting the greats

There's no shortage of banter when Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Lee Trevino get together in a room, as they did for nearly 25 minutes Saturday before teeing off for the Greats of Golf Challenge. Here's a snippet from each.

• Nicklaus, above, on the career Grand Slam, which Jordan Spieth can accomplish next week at the PGA Championship: "I never thought about it. I kept thinking about one year, not over a lifetime. Jordan will win the PGA whether it's this next week or another week. He's got 'it.' He's got a great short game, and I don't think his long game is as good as it is going to be. He's going to be a lot better as he gets a little older."

• Gary Player on missing Arnold Palmer: "Death is a celebration, not a disaster. Of course we all miss him. He was an icon, a servant to the game of golf. I always teased him and said if I smoked like you did, drank like you did and ate the [food] you did I wouldn't have made 65. I called him a month before he died and told him I loved him but if he goes before me I'm not going to any funeral. I hope he has a great course waiting for us up there."

• Lee Trevino on testing fate: "I've said to my priest, 'You're in sales, I've met management.' I was at Medinah on a Friday and there was lightning. I wasn't going to leave with all those people around. I took a 1-iron out and told all the people, 'Not even God can hit a 1-iron.' The next week he zapped me over at Butler National and I wound up in the hospital for 10 days. Haven't been right since, not that I was right to begin with. Now when I see lightning, I'm Carl Lewis."
