For all their dissimilarities, Gustav Mahler and Dmitri Shostakovich were birds of a feather. Their affinity is the basis of a brilliant program, devised by German baritone Matthias Goerne and Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes, that caps this season's Schubert Club International Artist Series. Goerne and Andsnes have interleaved excerpts from Shostakovich's late "Michelangelo" Suite with songs of Mahler (most of them from "The Youth's Magic Horn" and "Songs on the Death of Children"). Powerful stuff, performed by two of classical music's leading lights.
