Santana's suspension

Length: 80 games, returning July 4 at Kansas City, barring postponements.

The drug: Stanozolol, a common anabolic steroid.

Previous Stanozolol punishments: Rafael Palmeiro and Olympic sprinter Ben Johnson; Roger Clemens and Barry Bonds were both accused of using it.

What it means to Twins: The club gave Santana its richest free-agent deal ever, $55 million over four years, to help a rotation that has had the AL's worst ERA three consecutive seasons.

What it means to Santana: The suspension is unpaid, meaning he'll lose a little over $6.6 million in salary.

Stepping in: Mike Pelfrey, sidelined most of last season following elbow surgery, will move into the rotation. The Twins recalled lefthanded reliever Aaron Thompson to take Santana's spot on the roster.
