The Twins have a handful of relief prospects who stepped up with good seasons, and some are close to the majors:

Michael Tonkin (above), RHP, Class AAA Rochester: Tonkin, who was with the Twins briefly in July, turned a corner last year and has turned it on this year, posting a 2.63 ERA with the Red Wings while converting all 10 of his save opportunities. Good fastball that touches 97 miles per hour.

Edgar Ibarra, LHP, Rochester: Originally signed in 2006, Ibarra has finally overcome control problems to put himself on the radar. Has not allowed an earned run since June 4 when he was with New Britain — 29⅓ innings total. Throws 92-94 mph with a good slider.

Dakota Watts, RHP, Class AA New Britain: Slowed by injury early in the season, Watts has a 1.03 ERA through 20 games with the Rock Cats. He has touched 98 mph in recent outings and has developed a solid slider as a second pitch.

Zack Jones, RHP, Class A Fort Myers: He has touched 99 mph but normally throws around 95-97 and is working on a cutter and slider. Is 4-2 with a 1.81 ERA for the Miracle and has 62 strikeouts in 44â…” innings.

Tyler Jones, RHP, Fort Myers: Went 4-3 with a 1.93 ERA at Class A Cedar Rapids before promotion. Was a starter last season but has settled into life as a reliever. Fastball hit 91 mph early in season but recently at 94-95 mph. Also throws a slurve.
