Gophers replay

Iowa 23, Gophers 7

The recap: Iowa built a 17-0 lead by halftime and outgained the Gophers by nearly 300 yards (464 to 165) in the Big Ten opener for both teams.

What was learned: The Gophers averaged 282 rushing yards per game in nonconference play, but that meant little, as Iowa held them to 30 yards on 27 carries.

YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED:

• James Manuel replaced De'Vondre Campbell at outside linebacker after Campbell was slow reacting on Jake Rudock's third-down touchdown scramble in the second quarter.

• Cornerback Derrick Wells, who is playing with a right shoulder stinger, left the game twice after making painful tackles.

• Freshman receiver Drew Wolitarsky made his first college reception for 15 yards and was targeted two other times on that same drive by quarterback Philip Nelson.

The skinny: After defeating Notre Dame, the Wolverines nearly lost to Akron and Connecticut. That gave them plenty to stew about with a bye week to prepare for the Gophers. Michigan is 17-0 at home under third-year coach Brady Hoke. Quarterback Devin Gardner shined against Notre Dame, but he has 10 turnovers this season — eight interceptions and two lost fumbles. Michigan ranks second in the Big Ten in rushing defense, allowing 79 yards per game.
