Discount bus service Megabus is searching for a new drop-off location as complaints mount about its riders' activity near a parking lot on Washington Avenue S.

Business owners surrounding its stop told a City Council committee last week that riders have taken refuge in their buildings during cold winter days, defecated and urinated behind buildings, and sometimes left their luggage behind.

Megabus, a national company, does not provide its riders with indoor facilities, allowing it to keep prices low. It has struggled to find an appropriate outside location, particularly after the city asked the company to stop curbside pickups.

At dispute is whether the site is a "bus turnaround facility," which would require Megabus to obtain a special permit. The city's zoning administrator said it is. The Zoning Board of Adjustment disagreed. Business owners have appealed the zoning board's determination, which the City Council's Zoning and Planning Committee will vote on next week.
