A school bus making a left turn onto a freeway entrance ramp struck and injured a pedestrian in downtown Minneapolis Thursday, according to police and a witness.

The woman was walking east on 2nd Avenue N. and crossing 3rd Street where it funnels traffic onto westbound Interstates 94 and 394 when she was hit in the crosswalk by the bus, which was making a left turn onto one of the freeways, said police spokesman Scott Seroka.

The victim was trapped under the bus but was alert and talking when police and medical personnel arrived, Seroka said.

Witness Greg Benson was washing windows at the Savoie Building at 126 N. 3rd St. when he heard screaming. He ran to the scene and saw the victim pinned under the bus. He said the victim was bleeding and badly hurt.

The bus, registered to the Webster School District in Wisconsin, had apparently had just dropped off students at Target Field for the Twins game against the Texas Rangers. The bus was making the turn on a green light, police said.

The driver will be tested for drug and alcohol use, Seroka said.
