A Brooklyn Center man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the August 2016 shooting death of a 32-year-old Eagan man in north Minneapolis, the Hennepin County attorney's office announced Thursday.

Jamal Kareem Newell, 35, was about to stand trial on first-degree murder charges when he pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

Newell's sentencing hearing is on Oct. 11. He is expected to be sentenced to 25 years in prison.

The victim, Michael Damien Wayne Polk, was shot several times, including at least once in the head. He was taken off life support several days later.

According to the criminal complaint, Polk and another man walked out of a store at 35th and Penn Avenue N. about 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7, 2016, and got into their car.

Seconds later, another car drove up and five gunshots were fired into the car. One of the bullets hit Polk in the head. The other man was shot in the back.

During his guilty plea, Newell acknowledged that he was in the car from which the gun was fired, although he did not admit to shooting the gun, the county attorney's office said.
