A body found in the St. Croix River has been identified as Donald Duane Marklowitz Jr., 54, who was last seen in Hudson, Wis., on April 1, authorities said Thursday.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at 11:38 a.m. Tuesday that a body had washed ashore near the 900 block of Quentin Avenue in Lakeland, said Dan Starry, the chief deputy. The body appeared to have been in the water for a long time and was in a significant state of decomposition, he said.

Identification was made through the Ramsey County medical examiner's office.

The cause of death remains under investigation, said sheriff's Cmdr. Brian Mueller. At this time, neither the Washington County Sheriff's Office nor Wisconsin authorities are looking for anyone in connection with the case and no threat to the public exists, Mueller said.

The Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Hudson Police Department, he said.

Records show Marklowitz as being a resident of Fountain City, Wis.
