MENOMINEE, Mich. — Officials are considering an idea that would create a bike trail along the southern part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula as part of a broader trail plan.

The EagleHerald reports (http://bit.ly/13DmSrs ) Dickinson County Commissioner Barbara Kramer on Tuesday evening discussed the proposal with officials in Menominee County.

Plans are in the works at the state level for a hiking and biking trail from Belle Isle park in Detroit to Ironwood on the Wisconsin boundary in the western Upper Peninsula. The state has been considering a route along the northern portion of the Upper Peninsula.

Kramer wants officials to consider a southern route that would go through Iron, Gogebic, Dickinson, Menominee, Delta, Schoolcraft and Mackinac counties. The southern trail route also might be able to be used by all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.
