Enough about Cher already. How 'bout some love for Cyndi Lauper, who opened for Cher Wednesday at Target Center?
Like Cher (read the review here), Lauper chatted a lot (it helped her catch her breath), wore a big wig (an avalanche of Raggedy Ann curls) and showed off a big voice (no one questioned if she was lip syncing). The first time I saw her live back in the mid-1980s I thought the cartoonish star had a formidable voice that would last beyond its novelty vibe.
In her hour-long set at Target Center, Lauper did several tunes from her classic 1983 breakthrough "She's So Unusual " album, a number from her Emmy-winning 2013 Broadway musical "Kinky Boots" and just about everything you'd have hoped for except "True Colors."
She even acknowledged where she was by mentioning the Minnesota Wild (her son is a hockey dude) and that she was playing down the block from where Prince and the Time performed. Actually, across the street, Cyndi, but we're not complaining.
Even though Lauper opened most of Cher's Living Proof: The Farewell Tour in 2002-05, she was still a fitting choice for what Cher called her "farewell farewell tour" because Cyndi and Cher are 60-something sisters in girl-power spirit.
