EDINA

Former U.S. secretary to speak on drug abuse

Former U.S. Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare Joseph Califano Jr. will speak about substance abuse among youth at 7 p.m. on Sept. 21, at the Edina High School Performing Arts Center, 6754 Valley View Road.

Califano's presentation will draw from his recent book, "How to Raise a Drug Free Kid: The Straight Dope for Parents," and from his work as chairman and founder of the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. Califano's visit is at the request of former U.S. Congressman Jim Ramstad.

The public is invited to this free event, but organizers are suggesting a $5 donation with proceeds to go to youth prevention programs. Register by sending an e-mail to drugfreekids @ci.bloomington.mn.us.

EDEN PRAIRIE

5K and kids' runs to help raise money

The Foundation for Eden Prairie Schools is organizing a 5K run/walk and a one-mile fun run Sept. 26 during homecoming weekend to benefit Eden Prairie schools.

The 5K race starts at 8:30 a.m. The kids' fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. Both races will be held at the Eden Prairie High School Aerie Stadium, 17185 Valley View Road, Eden Prairie.

Eden Prairie parents, students, staff and alumni are encouraged to participate.

Register by Sept. 15 for the early-bird rate of $25 for the 5K and $15 for the one-mile fun run. Registration is open until the race starts.

Clinic offers discounts on sports physicals

Now through Oct. 31, Wellspring Health Center, a sports medicine clinic located at 10903 Excelsior Blvd. in Hopkins, is offering a 50 percent discount on sports physicals.

The physicals are $25 and are provided by a Minnesota-licensed physician assistant under the direction of a sports medicine physician.

Appointments are available Monday through Friday, including evenings. Bring any school or college sports forms and immunization records to the appointment.
