A teen and an adult were in critical condition Sunday after they were run over while standing on a slick Bloomington interstate. The driver who struck them is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.

Bloomington Kennedy High School junior Kole A. Krause, 16, and Kyle Farness, 31, of Savage, were at Hennepin County Medical Center being treated for life-threatening injuries, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Both were hit about 11:30 p.m. Friday by a car being driven on southbound Interstate 35W at 98th Street by Michael R. Martinez, 34, of Apple Valley. Law enforcement suspected Martinez had been drinking and took him into custody, according to the State Patrol.

Krause is a wrestler for Kennedy and participated in the state tournament individual meet at Xcel Energy Center in March.

According to the patrol:

Krause lost control and spun out in his pickup truck on the snowy and icy interstate. His truck was hit by a car driven by Jose Tizcareno, 44, of Burnsville, a collision that left both vehicles in the middle lane.

Farness, in a third car, stopped to help Krause. While Farness was standing on the highway, another driver, Khamphao Phonekeo, 57, of Burnsville, slowed his pickup truck and then he was hit from behind by the car driven by Martinez.

Martinez's car hit the freeway wall, then struck Krause and Farness.

Martinez suffered noncritical injuries, and Tizcareno and Phonekeo were not hurt.
