Authorities on Thursday identified the man who was fatally struck by a train just northwest of the Twin Cities.

Cody Haberman, 24, was hit about 6:15 p.m. Wednesday by a Burlington Northern Santa Fe train in Big Lake, according to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office.

Haberman, of Big Lake, was hit where the tracks cross Lake Street, also known as Hwy. 25, the Sheriff's Office said.

That location is equipped with a full complement of warning lights and crossing gates.

The eastbound train had several dozen cars carrying various types of freight, a rail spokeswoman said.

Kassey Jacobson, Haberman's fiancée, said he had just left his job at the McDonald's located up the street from where he was struck.

That McDonald's owner, Kris Genck, said in a written statement, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim and family involved in this tragic accident."
