The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency is investigating a large area in the Lyndale Avenue corridor of Bloomington for possible inclusion on the state Superfund cleanup list.

Several businesses in the corridor — including manufacturers, vehicle repair shops and dry cleaners — have used or are using hazardous chemicals, according to the agency's website.

More than 40 properties have been investigated, and contamination has been identified.

The primary contaminants of concern are trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), both solvents used for metal cleaning and other industrial processes.

Contaminated groundwater can release vapors into the soil that can enter nearby buildings.
