A woman charged with second-degree murder allegedly stabbed her boyfriend with a pocket knife after he told her she couldn't leave the relationship, according to charges filed Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court.
Tracy Loretta Kopas, 26, of Minneapolis, is accused of using the 7-inch folding knife to stab Raheem Akbar, 37, in the chest while they argued inside his Richfield apartment in the 6800 block of Cedar Avenue S.
According to charges, Kopas had asked a female friend to accompany her to Akbar's apartment while she retrieved a few items. When the friend arrived, she saw Akbar and Kopas arguing. Akbar allegedly told Kopas she could not leave because "he had put a ring on her finger and that he had bought her two cars." The argument then became physical, and as the friend tried to break up the two, Kopas pulled out the knife and stabbed Akbar on the left side of his chest.
Additional witnesses say Akbar responded to the stabbing saying "... you cut me" while Kopas responded "You know damn right." Akbar then tried to follow Kopas out of the apartment before he collapsed in the entryway.
He was transported by ambulance to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died a few hours later, police said.
Records show Kopas has previous convictions for theft, domestic assault and drunken driving.
