Edina police shoot, critically wound man

A man shot and critically wounded by Edina police officers Saturday at a residence had displayed a weapon, authorities said.

The shooting happened after police responded to a request for a welfare check on the man, who reportedly was acting in a threatening manner, according to city spokeswoman Jennifer Bennerotte.

Shots were fired inside a Windwood Condominiums unit in the 7500 block of Cahill Road just after 10:30 a.m. when the man displayed a weapon, she said. The type of weapon was not specified.

The man was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he was in critical condition. No officers were hurt, Bennerotte said.

Authorities have not identified the resident or the officers involved.

Several Hennepin County Sheriff's Office vehicles, including a crime lab van, worked through the day inside a large yellow-taped perimeter set up near the site of the shooting. The housing complex is east of the Braemar Golf Course. The Sheriff's Office is investigating at the request of Edina police.

One resident of the complex described on Twitter hearing "17 shots fired in our condo building."

While there have been several recent shootings by officers around the Twin Cities, the most recent one in Edina appears to have been 13 years ago. In August 2002, an Edina police officer killed a robbery suspect. When two men with pistols came into a restaurant and ordered everyone to the floor, the officer, there in civilian clothes, fired when one suspect pointed a gun at him, police said then.

In November 2000, Edina officers shot and killed a bank robber after he shot and severely wounded Edina officer Michael Blood, who was days from retirement.
