A man fleeing police in a car was arrested Tuesday morning, but not before he led officers on a pursuit through three cities and crashed into a Minneapolis police squad car.

The crash occurred after 11 a.m. at Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue in the Uptown area of south Minneapolis as police tried to stop the man, who was wanted by Hopkins police. The impact damaged a Minneapolis police car and left one officer with minor injuries, said John Elder, a Minneapolis police spokesman.

The suspect fled on foot, but was later arrested, police said.

The incident unfolded at 10:45 a.m. in the 200 block of 5th Avenue N. in Hopkins, where the suspect broke the car window of a female acquaintance. As officers were on scene taking a report, the suspect, in his own car, drove by the residence at a high rate of speed. Officers attempted to stop him, but he took off. He drove east on Hwy. 7 through Hopkins and St. Louis Park before entering Minneapolis, Sgt. Michael Glassberg of the Hopkins Police Department said.

Officers called off the pursuit near the Minneapolis border for safety reasons, Glassberg said.

The suspect continued on and hit the Minneapolis squad car that was on patrol. The suspect also hit another vehicle with an infant inside. The infant was treated by paramedics at the scene. The injured officer was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, Elder said.

The suspect was taken to a hospital.
