With 100 miles of well-maintained trails, ample parks, three large fitness centers and numerous programs promoting fitness, Eden Prairie has been named as the third healthiest retirement spot in the country.
The southwestern Twin Cities suburb came in only behind Bella Vista, Ark. and Boulder, Colo. in the annual ranking published in today's edition of U.S. News & World Report.
The 10 cities on the list were "way ahead of the curve" when it comes to providing places to exercise, promoting strong social support and encouraging healthy lifestyle habits, the magazine said.
The magazine's editors also looked at other criteria such as cost of living, recreational opportunities and climate to determine its top-10 list.
Eden Prairie was singled out for its abundance of park land, jogging paths, spiffy community center which recently was expanded, exercise classes for seniors, proximity to golf courses and lakes, and its summer civic festivals and concerts.
Ranking behind Eden Prairie are Green Valley, Ariz. at No. 4 and Issaquah, Wash. at No. 5, followed by Longmeadow, Mass, Portland, Maine, Punta Gorda Fla., Reston, Va. and Walnut Creek, Calif.
