It's the second week of below-freezing temperatures in the state, with icy roads present in five separate traffic accidents and six fatalities in the metro and surrounding areas this weekend.

A Sunday crash on Interstate 94 near Rogers, on the northwestern edge of the Twin Cities metro, killed one person, whose vehicle was pushed into parked construction equipment, authorities said.

The three-car wreck occurred about 9:15 a.m. on eastbound I-94, according to the State Patrol.

Megan Hinchliff, 24, of St. Michael, who was driving a Pontiac G6, was killed, the patrol said.

The other drivers, Larissa Bohler, 17, of St. Michael, and Craig Heckman, 42, of Clearwater, Minn., were not hurt, the patrol said.

A substantial backup on the interstate near Rogers lasted through the morning.

According to the patrol, Bohler spun out in her Toyota, prompting Heckman's Buick to strike the Pontiac G6. The Pontiac then left the road and "struck a stationary piece of construction equipment on the right side of the road," a patrol statement read.

The patrol described the interstate as icy at the time of the crash, but has yet to say that it contributed to Bohler losing control of her car.

Authorities say five people were killed in four separate fatal car wrecks Saturday.

Central Minnesota

A crash in central Minnesota occurred shortly after 3 p.m. Saturday as a pickup was heading north on the bypass connecting Hwy. 71 to Hwy. 23, about halfway between Willmar and Spicer.

The truck went off an icy road and rolled over, killing the driver, a 49-year-old man from Gary, S.D., authorities said. The driver's 55-year-old wife was not hurt. Identities were being withheld Sunday pending notification of family.

Another fatal crash occurred in Stearns County around 3 p.m. Saturday, according to the State Patrol. Patrick Thomes, 47, of Clearwater died on I-94 after his Dodge Dakota pickup left the road and rolled into a median.

Carver County

A woman and her 6-year-old son were identified Sunday as the victims who died in a crash on Hwy. 212 in Carver County that occurred at 1:50 p.m. Saturday. Three other people were hurt. A car heading east spun out on the icy highway and into the path of a pickup truck heading the other way, the patrol said.

Two people in the car were killed: Angelica Salas, 29, of Lester Prairie, Minn., and her 6-year-old son Jorge, the patrol said. The car's driver, Jorge Salas, 29, Angelica's husband, and their 4-year-old son, Omar, were injured.

The pickup's driver, Matthew Radde, 33, of Excelsior, was injured.

Also Saturday, a Waconia woman died after a 3:39 p.m. crash on County Road 10 in Laketown Township in Carver County. Misty Petschl, 34, died about 5 ½ hours later at Hennepin County Medical Center, the Hennepin County medical examiner said.
