Roseville police on Thursday found the body of a man who disappeared from his home in September, nearly one year after his son was shot and killed during a standoff with police.

Todd Hoffstrom, 56, was found dead in a car in Roseville around 11 a.m., according to a police news release. "The cause of death appears to be suicide," the release said.

Hoffstrom is the father of Ted Hoffstrom, a 30-year-old lawyer who was killed last fall by police after he fatally wounded Orono physician Dr. Stephen Larson at his home. Ted Hoffstrom had expressed hostility toward Larson because he believed the doctor had mistreated his mother in an undisclosed medical situation, police said.

Larson, 74, founded a medical group in Edina and Burnsville and was an expert on pelvic surgery,

Todd Hoffstrom had shown signs of severe depression and alcohol abuse since the loss of their son last November, his wife, Leeann Hoffstrom, said when he went missing.

Hoffstrom was last seen on Sept. 29 in his home. He left while the family was sleeping, taking only the clothes he was wearing and a wallet with less than $10 in it.

The couple began attending Survivor Resources, a support group in St. Paul, where "he told us he'd just love to drive his car into the river and drown," Leeann Hoffstrom said in September. "It was a red flag for all of us."

Family members said Hoffstrom had promised to check himself into Regions Hospital in St. Paul the day after he went missing; he had already made plans to take the time off work in order to do so.
