An elderly man was found dead near the shore of a lake in western Hennepin County shortly before dawn Tuesday, and his wheelchair also was pulled from the water, authorities said.

Anglers reported to police "something suspicious" in Lake Independence near a boat launch shortly after 6 a.m., said Maj. Darrell Huggett of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.

Medina police pulled the body to shore, Huggett said. Also recovered was his wheelchair. The man's vehicle was parked in a handicap spot nearby, Huggett added.

The man's identity has yet to be released. Huggett said there has been no determination about how the man, who lives in the metro area, and his wheelchair ended up in the lake.
