Bloomington man charged in 2003 slaying

Last update: August 20, 2008 - 11:58 PM

A 23-year-old Bloomington man was charged Wednesday with being one of two men dressed in black who fatally shot a man at a south Minneapolis street corner on a summer night five years ago.

Jonathan N. Turner, aka Thirsty, is charged with second-degree murder in the July 29, 2003, death of Marcus J. Dortsch, 24, of Minneapolis, and remains in the Hennepin County jail.

The shooting doesn't appear to be random, and a second suspect remains at large, police said.

According to the criminal complaint:

Two men dressed in black hooded sweat shirts and armed with handguns approached Dortsch at E. 22nd Street and Oakland Avenue S., called him a racial epithet and began shooting. Dortsch and a woman who was with him fled, and the gunmen chased after them and kept shooting.

Dortsch and the woman, both shot, were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he died. The woman was treated and released.

A witness said he saw the shooting, including seeing the men shooting Dortsch in the back at close range and observing Turner standing over Dortsch and clicking an empty gun.
